Antique French Sterling Silver Tastevin Wine Taster Coin Dieu Protege la France

Rare antique silver tastevin made from a 19th century 5-franc coin. By using various hammers and tools, the coin was thinned and shaped into this gleaming wine-tasting cup. The trick, however, was to have the letters which were on the edge of the coin, “Dieu Protege la France, ” to sit perfectly on the rim of the cup… Very few talented french silversmiths were able to do this, and the practice stopped altogether by mid-20th century. These are often identified by their weight, always 25 grams + the weight of the handle equalling about 32 grams. The handle brings to us more interesting information… On top of the ring sits a silver coin of 50 centimes from 1917, made during WWI. This 100 year-old coin couldn’t have been in circulation for very long as it looks brand new. The collector who previously owned this tastevin suspected that it was likely created during wartime, when art and objects, in general, were made with whatever materials were available. That would make this an exceptional example of fine trench art. ” Traditional in form, the round “cupules” and elongated “godrons of the cup are designed to create reflections which help one to better judge the color and clarity of a wine. The small indentations in the form of grape bunches add further texture and charm to this clever cup. There are no hallmarks to this piece as it was re-shaped from coins; we do know that the cup is of a 5-franc coin, 900/1000 parts silver weighing 25 grams. The thumb-rest coin of 50 centimes is 835/1000 parts silver and weighs 2.5 grams. The remaining silver ring would have to weigh 5 grams, bringing the total weight to 32.5 grams; perfect! Diameter of the cup is 2.75 inches, 3.4 inches with the handle. Condition is excellent; no dents or dings to this fascinating and well-preserved museum quality tastevin. As the items that we sell are often fragile and irreplaceable, great care is taken during packaging to ensure their safe transit and arrival. Items must be in the same condition as when received.
